I try to avoid staying at airport hotels as much as possible, but especially when catching an early flight out of LAX, staying close by is the smart thing to do. My usually fall back hotel is the Westin LAX, but while I recall a decent past experience at the Four Points by Sheraton LAX, this recent experience brought back memories of Motel 8 and Travelodge. The so-called “Classic Rooms” not only feature windows to the open hallway, but also in the case of #245 add extremely thin walls into the mix, a bathroom in need of remodeling, a shower I did not want to step into and while the two beds at least looked okay, the bedding was damp (at a 10 pm arrival).

Need I say more? Am sparing you the nastier close-ups and details about the neighboring activities.

Well, I usually don’t show up for my flights until it is pretty much time to board, however after unsuccessfully trying to sleep at the Four Points LAX, I opted to rather spend 3+ hours waiting at Terminal 6 instead. And those who know Terminal 6 at LAX know that the hotel was bad ind we if one rather comes here!

However, on the bright side: Brewsters Beererie at the Sheraton Four Points offers the most impressive beer list I have ever seen at a hotel. Over 100 brews, ten locals beers on tap, and some rare finds too – all nicely grouped into eight categories.

As a German, finding the Hofbräuhaus Weizen, one of my favorites, on the extensive list, was quite something. From “lighter” to “dark/roasty” and “wild/sour/funk”, there is even some humor there: “Macro Beer” features Coors, Miller and Schlitz (Tall can) for the crappy mass market beer aficionado  – coincidentally those are also the cheapest beers available.

Now what really made the bar visit was Oswaldo, a host extraordinaire. Justin Blake is the beer guru who has been working on the hoppy menu for 3+ years. There is a full menu too and they offer a happy hour. While I cannot recommend staying at the 4Points LAX, you may want to stop by Brewsters Beererie for a pint or two, three. There is a free SPG shuttle to and from LAX to the FourPoints LAX hotel, parking however is at cost and with $24/night for hotel guests another bad joke.

Do you have a favorite airport hotel? I would love to finally find one.
